I'm not sure about the full lists, but here's something I found. It's a list of Victorian Theatre Companies. Bart Simpson wrote this:

"The Actors' Vow"
From Elia Kazan

I will take my rightful place on the stage
And I will be myself.
I am not a cosmic orphan, I have no reason to be timid.
I will respond as I feel; awkwardly, vulgarly,
But respond.
I will have my throat open.
I will have my heart open.
I will be vulnerable.
I may have anything or everything
The world has to offer,
But the thing I need most,
And want most, is to be myself.
I will admit rejection, admit pain, admit shame,
Admit outrage, admit anything and
Everything that happens to me.
The best and most human parts of me are
Those I have inhabited and hidden from
The world.
I will work on it.
I will raise my voice.
I will be heard.

Solo bow instructions

You run down the middle of the stage smiling with each arm open at 45 degrees from vertical and palms facing up and forward; stop three quarters of your height before the edge; kneel on one knee; close your eyes, stop smiling, bow your head and kiss the top of your fist; slowly lift your head and open your eyes towards the spotlight; touch the top of your fist to your forehead; realise that the audience are clapping for you and smile a little, bewildered; open your hand flat against your forehead and look around the audience, smile increasing; look straight up at the ceiling and raise your hand loosely to the ceiling and cry a little while quietly saying, 'I did this for you, mama'; stand up while closing your eyes, smiling a little and bringing your fist down loosely onto your head; open your eyes and put your hands together in prayer position while saying 'thank you' and nodding to the centre of all the audience levels; put your fists by your side, face the left audience with your feet together, and bending from the hip, keep your legs straight and slide your fists down your sides until your torso is ninety degrees from vertical, then rise smiling with authority; turn to the right audience and repeat the bow. Wave thank you to the entire general audience over a period of 2.0 seconds (your hand waves to two positions from left to right, your eyes gaze at four positions from left to right); if there are upper levels, wave to them with both hands over a period of 1.0 second; then lower your arms and turn to smile at your cocast while walking to your place.

Please ensure that you hug the cast member next to you and share a moment with them so the audience can enjoy your connection and wish they were performers. This is the most important moment of the show for most people, so make sure it looks genuine, even if you just had a fight with your fellow performer the day before and they shouldered you as you came back from the bathroom to get changed during intermission. You're an actor. Sacrifice your desire to shoulder them back even harder now, and let the audience believe in Santa Claus for this one night. It's your job to create dreams, after all.

I'm sure YouTube will have the answer. Let's see...

Sorry about the audio being out of sync but I couldn't find any other versions. Wait until the end - the audience are so moved by this bowing technique that they simultaneously invent a beautiful new method of applause. If real life were like this I'd accept my insanity and stop resisting.

Whoever knew that bowing could be so complicated!!! :o

I get where you are coming from Simon. Do you clap as others are bowing? Do you smile and nod? And as for bowing yourself... is it different for females and males? Do we step forward and bow?

All these questions I have no idea how to answer, I find in most productions I've been in, the director decides how everyone bows.

One thing that doesn't work and I think needs a solution of sorts is the company bow. It always turns into a mexican wave or people bow too early or late. There must be a solution. Most of the time we are just told to follow the lead of the performer in the middle but that also adds to the mexican wave effect as the outside people don't get the signal until the middle have nearly finished bowing.

Any ideas on a solution??? :worried:

I was in Les Mis early last year and our Javert broke his foot in our last rehearsal before opening night. He didn't do it jumping off the barricade or dancing, he was simply walking on stage to take his bow and rolled his foot in his oversized shoe and broke his foot. :o

He battled through 5 out of 9 shows on crutches before realising it was all too much for him and prepared himself for his surgery. We had a replacement for the last 4 shows.

In the show I did after that, another girl broke her arm while falling over on stage (on purpose).

I wonder... are we looking after our performers enough in shows? :(

Our Fagin was climbing down the scaffolding during a performance of Oliver, slipped, caught himself and laughingly said 'I'm okay boys!'. Then, to improvise a joke for the kids, he wiped his brow and said 'Phew', and pretended he lost his grip. When he reached back to grab the railing to end the joke, his hand slipped due to its fingerless glove, he fell about three metres, cracked his wrist bone, smashed a patella, broke his clavicle and broke two fingers. Oh, and he also cracked his skull - the brow and cheek.

He still looks reasonably normal, he just slurs a bit.

The show was cancelled that night and everyone got a refund. The director had to fill in after that.

Every time I've been in a show, there's been at least one black eye or broken bone. Just wondering what injuries people have seen in their productions.

My favourite films are:

  1. Avatar
  2. District 9
  3. King Kong
  4. Blood Diamond
  5. Earthlings
  6. The Lion King
  7. A Beautiful Mind
  8. Back to the Future Part 2
  9. Gladiator

I prefer TV series though, because I get to know the characters so much more. These are my favourites:

  1. Sopranos
  2. Family Guy
  3. Boston Legal
  4. Californication
  5. Entourage

The ultimate visual entertainment, of course, is video games. I haven't played enough lately. My favourites at the moment are Fallout 3 and Sexy Beach 3. Best played with a diagonal ceiling projection or video glasses.

Theatre is okay if you're in the first few rows, but if you're not up the front and it's not immersive then it's nowhere near as good as something that's been professionally filmed. Theatre would be better if shows were brought up to date and used more smoke, lasers and proper sound effects. Wicked is the most visually engaging show I've seen. Large audience spectacles will finally be good when holographic projection is invented and becomes decent enough that the action can reach the highest point in an arena, or better still, fill the sky.

I've forgotton a lot of what I've seen, and when people remind me, I realise that there are lots of good shows that I've neglected to mention. What are your favourites?
